A fictional Canadian comic strip character’s publishing success aside (on an unagented submission, no less!), my second photobook (why do I insist on typing that out as one word?) was shipped yesterday so the waiting game commences. Again!
I am revising my last completed novel. A couple of agents made similar comments about a character problem and I’ma fixin’ it. It was totally overwhelming in the OH MY GOD WHY COULDN’T I HAVE JUST WRITTEN IT RIGHT IN THE FIRST PLACE IT WAS SO OBVIOUS way initially, but I do believe I’ve finally hit my stride which is a total yay. It definitely helps knowing that these changes will improve the book–if I can do them justice. Cue motivational/inspirational soundtrack… now. Ideally, the revisions should be done by the end of February and then it will be back to querying agents. And then there’s this new novel in progress which I am really enjoying writing except when I’m not. O what fun.
The other night I was struck by an idea for a photo series that doesn’t involve the living dolls, which was totally unexpected. I think it could have a lot of potential, but it will demand a lot from me as a photographer and not–it definitely would my most ambitious attempt at telling stories with pictures yet. In any case, the bare bones idea of it got me excited, so I’d really like to do it. It struck me later how similarly great getting an idea for a photo series is to getting an idea for a novel (I don’t know why–it’s all storytelling). I thought that was pretty cool.
So no one has gotten to my site searching for Andre Mayer in five hundred years, but I’m going to change all that by talking about him now! Andre Mayer writes great columns for the cbc/arts page and sometimes I spend seconds of my life wondering if I should email him just to ask him why he is so awesome and how he would respond to that question (how would anyone respond to that question?). Check out his article on hipster parenting. I found it really interesting.

Oooh I want to know what the photography series idea is! I’ll have to bug you to tell me in an email!
Also, two thumbs down to hipster parenting!
Ah! I mean to tell you so I could get your opinion on whether it sucked or not but. I guess I will bug you with it at a later date heh.
Two thumbs down x 2!
I know your revision will be successful. If you’re that excited about it now, you will be excited about it for a while, and it’ll finally get done!
And no living dolls? Ooh, what do you have in mind? No need to explain right now, but maybe a one-word hint so we can anticipate?
This made me laugh with such recognition:
“OH MY GOD WHY COULDN’T I HAVE JUST WRITTEN IT RIGHT IN THE FIRST PLACE IT WAS SO OBVIOUS…”
I mean, really! Why can’t we know ahead of time what to fix??!! That would help me so much.
Your revision progress, plus the new novel, and PLUS a soon-to-be new photo series (???) is exciting to me! Can’t wait to hear more…
w: Thanks! I hope it is. It’s lost it’s exciting lustre and I’m taking a minute away from it but oh my gosh, I can’t wait until it’s done. And re: the new photo project. I think I can give you a one-word hint without giving away too much (or maybe giving away too much!): yearbook! :)
nova: Seriously! I wish I could just know ahead of time what was wrong with my books so I could fix them before I start going through my list of prospective agents. Aggh!
