I haven’t seen Garden State, but I know there’s this scene where Natalie Portman (playing the token quirky girl) tells Zach Braff (playing himself) that he’s “gotta hear this one song, it’ll change your life, I swear.” The song is New Slang by the Shins. Whether or not that particular song changes your life, who knows, but we’ve all listened to That Life-Changing Song, whatever it was, once or many times in our lives, haven’t we?
Music is one of my greatest sources of inspiration. My headphones are practically fused to my ears, which is probably bad in the long-term, but oh well. I love pop candy music and songs that punch you in the gut or make you mad or make you happy or make you sad and the ones that really do change your life. I love music, I love talking music and I LOVE the idea of sharing that one song that expanded your universe a little or a lot and made you so thankful you had a working pair of ears. I mean, it’s all so subjective ultimately, but there’s a warm and fuzzy feeling in saying, “Here is a song that means something to me. I think you will like it. I hope you do.”
So once a week, I think I will do this because I think it could be fun. Welcome to the first of what will hopefully be a regular blog feature entitled THIS SONG MIGHT CHANGE YOUR LIFE, WHO REALLY KNOWS, BUT PROBABLY YOU SHOULD HEAR IT*.
And today that song is While We Were Hunting Rabbits by Matthew Good.
I promise Matt Good’s people aren’t paying me since this is the millionth time I’ve mentioned him in my blog in the last month. Anyway, While We Were Hunting Rabbits is the seventh track off of Matt’s first solo effort, Avalanche, and it’s probably my favourite song of his. Some songs become the song for certain moments in your life and they stay there. As you move on, you feel nostalgic about them and you remember how much they meant to you and maybe you you listen to them every now and again, but they’ll never feel as relevant or as grand as they did then. The interesting thing about Rabbits–for me at least–is that it’s a song that’s never lost that relevancy, it’s a song I keep going back to. It’s an epic, longing, demanding, bittersweet composition that reminds you of how infinitesimal you are and yet its lush orchestration and careful build–this song has one of the most amazing climaxes I have ever heard, seriously it makes my heart want to explode–is full of possibility and movement. The end result is something really big and bold and beautiful and cinematic. It sits right in the middle of your throat. If you want to make a real experience of it, listen to it in the car with the windows rolled down (preferably while driving a scenic rural route).
Lyrics snippet:
while we were hunting rabbits I came upon a clear
the sky its stars like fortune drilled me
until now I was a soldier, until now I dealt in fear
these years of cloak and dagger have left us disappeared
and I dance and I sing and I’m a monkey in a long line of kings
and we dance, we sing, we’re all monkeys in a long line, long line
I’m just a boat on the ocean, I’m just a ship lost at sea
Here is the video for While We Were Hunting Rabbits. The quality of the audio is slightly subpar but it’s worth listening to. The song (and album, which I highly recommend) is also available for purchase from iTunes. That’s a dollar for eight minutes of genius–sounds like a deal full of win to me!
And if you have a song that changed your life or that you really, really enjoyed, don’t hesitate to share it because I wanna know about it!
* title is obviously a work in progress

I am totally blown away by U2–I just discovered them a couple of years ago when they were on SNL. (I’d heard of them before, but I thought they were just some 80s band.) “Beautiful Day”–I love that song.
Turned on my HD last night and discovered it had captured a rockumentary on the making of “Rattle and Hum.” (I set the HD to record all things Bono and U2.) Yeah, it was almost midnight but I couldn’t help myself. I tuned in and dropped on the couch and was blown away again. Their music–it lifts me up, renews me. I feel powerful and happy listening to it.
Dude
You stole my ‘this song will change your life’ song. :)
Danette: Thanks for sharing–I know someone who loves U2 with as much zest as you do. If only I could introduce you! :) I love music that makes you feel like you can take on the world… U2 is sadly unrepresented in my music collection. I’ll have to correct that!
Vero: It’s because of you that I know that song!! I owe you for it!! <3
I love Garden State (with reservations I won’t go into because it doesn’t matter if you haven’t seen it yet, because it’s totally worth seeing, you should rent it, I hope this comment doesn’t give it too much hype). Anyway, I have effectively ruined that movie for the person who lives with me. I turn it on whenever it’s on cable, no matter how far in it is, so I guess we’ve seen pieces of it at least twelve times.
This “song that might change your life #1″ is really good.
One of mine was “Babydoll” by Cat Power.
I really wanted to see Garden State when it came out and then all of the sudden Zach Braff was EVERYWHERE and… okay, that’s a really bad reason for not watching a movie but it did put a stall on it for sometime, I was Zach Braffed out, heh. I think I need to do a mental warm-up to watch it but if you like it that much that’s one point in its favour. I’m glad you liked teh Good.
Cat Power is amazing!! I saw an interview with her recently and she’s in such a good place from where she was and it was really inspiring. I haven’t heard Baby Doll, though–have you heard her song Ice Water? That song is so sad and exhausting but I loved it for a time.
Ice Water??? I don’t have that one. Got to track it down…
I completely understand being Zach Braffed out. I saw the movie opening weekend without knowing anything about it. If I’d waited even one weekend I think the hype would have burned my eyes out. So… maybe wait a few years and THEN watch it?
HI Courtney! Stopping by to check out the blog – love it :)
Here’s my really old school contribution to the “music that changed” thread -
On the Turning Away, Pink Floyd.
Take care and talk to you soon :)
Eileen
Nova: I think it’s from her earlyish stuff? Either way, I would be happy to gmail it to you! Just say the word. & You totally saw Garden State at the perfect time. I think I am just going to have to suck it up and pretend it is not Zach Braff since I have a feeling he is going to remain everywhere just to spite me. Sometimes I think he doesn’t want me to invest in his career at all, especially when he was on Punk’d and acting like a dork. I was like “Why do you do this, Zach Braff, when I am trying to psyche myself up for your film?”
Ah wow, that was a tangent.
Eileen: Thank you for a) stopping by b) commenting and c) contributing! I haven’t heard that Pink Floyd song and now I think I’ll definitely have to make an effort to. And Pink Floyd isn’t old! They are timeless. ;)
vero turned me onto this tasty song a while back with MANY NASTY THREATS ABOUT OUR FUTURE FRIENDSHIP unless i loved this song immediately :)
i loved this song when i first heard it, 21 years old, and utterly alone.
Kelvin: Every time I listen to While We Were Hunting Rabbits is never fails to make me <3 it.
Also Vero is awesome like that. It is a really make or break friendship song as in if you don’t like it there is something wrong with you. CAN YOU IMAGINE IF YOU DIDN’T LIKE IT?! We would all look at you cross-eyed and it would be sad. Funny for you to look at mebbe, but sad for us.
