this song might change your life #4 & 5

Maybe this will become an ‘every two weeks’ thing…

This Song Might Change Your Life #4:

M.I.A. – Paper Planes
from Kala

Thanks entirely to my friend K, I’d been slowly getting into M.I.A.‘s music and with the release of Kala, I’m happy to say I’m completely into it. Paper Planes is the song that gave me that final push. I can’t get enough of it. M.I.A. is an incredibly driven, intelligent and original artist with an incredibly driven, intelligent and original sound which means when you listen to her, the life changing potential is high! In related news, I was so sad to see this censored on Letterman.

This Song Might Change Your Life #5:

Elliott Smith – Between the Bars
from Either/Or

There’s not much to say about Elliott Smith that hasn’t already been said–and said better–by someone else. Many of his songs have a deceptively calm and quiet quality to them, a sad hunger. There’s something universal about Between the Bars that I’ll never be able to pinpoint. I almost think this song knows when there’s something wrong before you do, or at least that’s been the case whenever I get the urge to put it on. Which is kind of disconcerting in retrospect! Either way, I listen to Elliott Smith with care. His music is not easy but it’s worth it.
