happy valentine’s day

I think Your Mom is going to be the novel I wrote entirely to songs from the 1990′s, which is so awesome it hurts. Yeah, that’s right. I’m binging on tunes from the 90′s.

REMEMBER THESE SONGS?

(At least ONE has to take you back. If none of them do, you did not own a radio or you were born after 1999. OR we had different tastes in music.)

  • Ace of Bace – The Sign
  • Alanis Morrissette – Ironic
  • Baz Luhrmann – Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)
  • Blur – Song 2
  • Bush – Glycerine
  • Cranberries – Zombie
  • Eve 6 – Inside Out
  • Fastball – The Way
  • Joan Osborne – One of Us
  • Kula Shaker – Hush
  • Matchbox 20 – Push
  • Matthew Good Band – Hello Time Bomb
  • No Doubt – Just a Girl
  • Oasis – Wonderwall
  • Offspring – Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)
  • Our Lady Peace – Superman’s Dead
  • Placebo – Every You Every Me
  • Poe – Angry Johnny
  • Semisonic – Closing Time
  • Third Eye Blind – Semi-Charmed Life
  • Verve Pipe – The Freshmen
  • White Town – Your Woman

  • And that’s just a very, very small sampling–there are so many more! I had to trim my list which was a million songs long. They make me so happy. O, the 1990′s. It was a sonically beautiful age where everyone loved each other and nobody fought and it was perpetually summer all year round.

So tell me, peoples, what are your pinnacle songs from the 90′s?

    Let us nostalgia together.

Oh I loved that song, Zombie. And Superman’s Dead, Push, Hello Time Bomb. Yikes–this makes me feel old. I’d definitely add some Metallica to the list, like Unforgiven.

The radio station that I listen to plays classic & new rock, so a lot of these I still hear pretty often. :-)

Oh. My. I know these songs from high school. I can’t wait until I read more of your book, dear! Go forth, write, and talk to me soon! -A (your agent) Yes, I read your blog ….

As always, the Towel Bond is in full effect because I was going through my *cough* nearly 6000 song long *cough* iTunes library a couple days ago (making a play list entitled M3 and I will let you figure out what that stands for) and thinking about how much better music was in the 1990s. And I re-listened to a lot of Jagged Little Pill and I was like, “Wow, this is totally a good album, self. Why haven’t you listened to it in like, ten years?” And then I come here and see your post about 1990s nostalgia!

Anyway, I think you’ve hit most of my pinnacle songs! Definitely Wonderwall, Just a Girl (although I might swap it for another No Doubt song – Don’t Speak, maybe?), Ironic (God, I loved that song until it got played out and everyone started pointing out how Alanis didn’t know the definition of irony). I’d probably have to add in Green Day and Counting Crows. Oh, and Jewel. Oh, God, you are making me nostalgic for my youth which is sad because I am only twenty-five!

Anyway, I think the fact that you’re writing to 90s songs basically means YOUR MOM is going to be yet another success for you. Because, seriously, you can’t go wrong with 90s music. You just can’t.

Susan: The Wallflowers! Chumbawumba! The Wonders! *memories*

Marcia: How did I never hear of that song. *sad*

Angela: Don’t feel old! Feel COOL for being part of the 90′s! Because 90′s music is AWESOME. Also, I am so happy that you remember the Canadian bands on there. I was hoping someone would!

Amy: ! *makes mental note to never write about slacking in the writing department* I think it’s shaping up! I hope it is… *goes forth and writes* :D

Lori: TB! I too, am stunned about how much better music was in the 1990s. As well as 1990′s movies and TV. We are a blessed generation. And! When I added Wonderwall I thought of you and then! I totally had a longer list than what I actually posted but Counting Crows and Jewel was TOTALLY ON IT!!! *Further TB* AND! Wait, I forget what I was going to say. Oh yeah! The Simpsons totally did an episode about the 90′s and used all these references and songs and I was like AH I GET THE JOKES! And then I too, felt old. But really I think we shouldn’t feel old. We should feel way cool. I am hoping you are right. I hope 90′s music blesses everything that it touches. And that you are having a clawesome day. (rainbows)

No Rain, Blind Melon; and definitely Ironic by AM!

      Ooh!! Blind Melon!! Yes!

Glad to see White Town’s Your Woman on that list. A much neglected and overlooked 90s classic that, very briefly, put my home town of Derby on the map. Other classics? Grace – Not Over Yet, Altern8 – Evapor8, Rialto – Untouchable, Orbital – Satan, there’s just too many to list. I wonder what greats from this decade will be canonised and live in the music hall of fame, forever?

Whatever greats they choose, I really, really hope that Lily Allen is one of them. Even though I know so many people would vehemently disagree with me. :) And Regina Spektor! It’d be nice to see her canonised and living in the music hall of fame.

I fear I may be completely mainstream here, but at the risk of being so, I have to offer up some Nirvana, either Smells Like Teen Spirit or Come As You Are or Lithium, as well as U2′s One, Pearl Jam’s Jeremy and Black, Soundgarden’s Black Hole Sun, Spin Doctors Two Princes, The Verve’s Bittersweet Symphony and the Fugees cover of Killing me Softly…

    12. 3 years, 11 months ago

Nothing’s wrong with mainstream! I mean. 99% of the songs I listed were all in Rick Dee’s top 10, I think. Heh. I forgot all about Bittersweet Symphony!! I HATED that song when it came out and now I love it. And the Fugees!! Aaah, memories!!

    13. 3 years, 11 months ago

I would have Better Man by Pearl Jam, and lots of Australian songs…aw I’m all nostalgic now :)

      Hee, the 90′s does that!!
