Susan wrote a great and very interesting post about author photos (keep your eye out for part two!). I don’t know when I’ll have to start worrying about my author photo in earnest but it has been suggested I table this picture for consideration:

I have a feeling it might not go over with St. Martin’s Press, however, so I’m going to table this one instead:

I hope they let you be more creative than usual with your author photo, seeing as you’re a photographer and all. You have some incredible self-portraits in your Flickr…
Courtney, thanks for linking my post! I’m torn between your two options here. I think the bottom one is better because your ears look perkier (is that a word? Perkier?). And your whiskers are saying “I am fun. I can frolic. But when I have to, I can detect the slightest directional change in a breeze.”
I stole that last bit from googling just now about whiskers. I’m bad.
Anyway, I’d go with the second–just look at that eye-shine!
The second one’s way too adorable. I’m in love with Zippy.
I don’t think they would like the first one either but it is a very cool picture :) I think it would be great for a back cover pic but a publisher might think other wise.
Who at St. Martin’s decides these things? Now that we know your agent occasionally reads this blog, could I mount some sort of campaign to get the first one on the book jacket? ;)
Hey what have you got to lose, right? I like both shots. Sometimes, you have to have a little fun with it…
nova: aw, thanks! I’m pretty sure the photo has to be black and white but I love me some black and white.
Susan: your comment made me laugh so hard. It was the breeze part. Totally the breeze part.
CK: Zippy is chilling right in front of my computer as I type. I showed him your comment. ;) If degus could read, I am sure he would appreciate it!! And I hope you’re feeling better soon, btw.
Brian: I’m happy to leave covers to SMP. Heh, I wouldn’t want my obscured face taking up all that space! ;)
A: I’m not sure! My ed, possibly? I know I’d be sending it on to her. Heh, as much as I like the first one, I am not sure I would like it 10 years from now. That is my basic criteria for any potential author photos. ;)
Angela: The worst they can say is no! ;)
