I meant to mention this sooner, but St. Martin’s Press put the first four chapters of Cracked Up to Be up on their page for the book. That’s 45 pages! And it’s a pdf file, so it looks pretty snazzy, too. Also, Cracked Up to Be is now available on the Kindle. I secretly wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that I clicked the Tell the Publisher I’d like to read this on the Kindle button on Amazon once just to see what’d happened cough BUT EVEN SO, I think that is cool.

I don’t have a Kindle, though. Sadness! I kind of want one. But not as much as I want a sweet, sweet pair of Ray-ban Wayfarers (by the way, I am pretty sure both of these things are alarmingly close in price). Do you suppose there are people out there who own Kindles and Ray-ban Wayfarers?

I bet there are.

I bet they are so happy in their souls.

So I’m 10,000 words into a new novel. I can’t tell you how happy this makes me because when I’m not writing, I feel like I’m missing something important. Like my face. And I need that thing to emote at people with, you know?

Anyway, I’m amped for this book, not gonna lie. It “arrived” differently than the other books and it’s all been very exciting to me. It is yet another gentle reminder that starting a new book is like starting a new relationship with someone… new. Uhm. Anyway, current relationship status: we are in the honeymoon stages. We are married and in love.

I CAN’T WAIT FOR OUR EVENTUAL DIVORCE AND DRAMATIC RECONCILIATION.

Speaking of dramatic reconcilations, do you think Jon and Kate will have one? That show distresses me, you guys. It has always distressed me, though. Every time I watched it I would get this horrible anxiety in my chest because I would try to imagine raising eight kids all relatively close in age and I would just freak out until I remembered I didn’t have to and I’d change the channel and it was all good again.

But now I’m distressed in a different way. I feel like I am living with the weight of their hard times on my shoulders. Should we talk about this? The repercussions of Reality TV? Is Reality TV bad? Are we, the viewers, responsible on any level, for the degradation of Jon and Kate’s marriage? Should I even be blogging about this? It somehow seems too personal.

And how can Reality TV be bad when it brings us pictures of JEFF PROBST STANDING IN THE RAIN?

In other news, I have been lucky enough to read some good books lately! You should read them too:

  • Evermore by Alyson Noel
  • A Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey by Jill Bolte Taylor
  • The Spectacular Now by Tim Tharp
  • Overqualified by Joey Comeau
  • The links will take you to my GoodReads reviews and you can get my full take on them there. If you have read any of them, I’d love to know what you thought! I’ve just begun C.K. Kelly Martin’s latest, One Lonely, Degree. I’ve been waiting for that book FOREVER, just so you know. Imagine how happy my face was when I got the mail and it was there, right on the release date! C.K. has kindly agreed to another interview for the blog as well, which I’m really looking forward to.

And that is really all the news that is fit to print right now! I am going to stop typing this entry and continue working on Book 3.

I mean, just after I am done staring at this:

First: I loved the line that you can’t wait for your divorce and eventual reconciliation. Because I so understood that, and LAUGHED.

Also: I dreamed about Alyson Noel last night. I have no idea what it was, except that the words “ALYSON NOEL” and “EVERMORE” played some important neon-ish role. Perhaps this is a sign from my subconscious?

Also more: I read your FB notice about the brain science book, and then this weekend heard a Fresh Air interview with the author and was fascinated. And here you mention it AGAIN. Now I will HAVE to follow up.

Are you messing with me, Summers? Are you trying to get me to not wade into revisions today, with distracting shiny things and talk of new books?

It will not work, I tell you.

I would like a Kindle, I lose my glasses too much for Ray-Bans, I usually just get the dollar store kind, but I pray, as I do also for world peace, for a Kindle, a iPod, and a Doctor Who fob watch. I think my outlook on life when it comes to things is just fine :)

10,000 words is awesome. Congrats! That honeymoon phase is like a slice of heaven. Also, congratulations on the Kindle and St. Martin’s Press coolness!

And THANK YOU for mentioning One Lonely Degree! You’re so much better at promoting my stuff than I am :)

I have another picture for you to compare and contrast:

with the Jeff one. There’s no rain so I realize it’s not quite as dramatic but it’s so very pretty.

Ray-bans > Kindle. The image of sitting outside (in the sun of course) with a sweet pair of expensive Ray-bans and a cheap paperback book is highly alluring in its contrast. Ray-bans + Kindle would be a little too hipster IMHO. :) Anyway, 3RD BOOK! I am excited.

Congrats on the progress of your new book. I simply CAN’T WAIT to work on something new, meself. I anxiously await the ‘working title’ you give this one. No pressure or anything.

And Jon & Kate. Don’t you feel like you and I called this months and months ago? I sort of think we had our fingers on the pulse of this thing and now it’s all sort of falling apart. Maybe we (you and I) are to blame, not everybody else.

Thankfully, I don’t watch it much, but I absorb enough through my wife that I feel like it’s a trainwreck that was bound to happen. It’s like it’s blown past the train station and headed right for the Back to the Future Part III ravine.

      You know what I mean.

Personally, I think now that the Paparazzi video is out, you need to abandon Wayfarers for WHATEVER those spectacular flip-up sunglasses were that Gaga was wearing!!! :-O

@Susan Adrian: *writer fist bump* And oh my God, if that is not a sign you need to read Evermore, I do not know what is. READ IT. We must talk about it–you, me and Emily! And YOU HAVE TO READ JILL BOLTE-TAYLOR’S BOOK. I beg you. It is ABSOLUTELY incredible. I’d love to talk about it with you… it seriously changed so many perceptions I’ve had and just made me fascinated with this thing in my head that is enabling me to type this comment to me now. I mean. REVISE FIRST. YES. THAT IS WHAT I MEAN. *\o/*

@Brian: I wonder what would be “easier” to lose, a Kindle or a Ray-Ban? I would cry so many tears for both if I managed to lose them. :)

@C.K: Thank you on all counts. Oh my God, 1LD was amazing, I want to tell everyone about it!! And, hee. Phil is totally pretty. It is my secret dream that he and Jeff Probst co-host a Reality Show. Phil’s eyebrow pop could be offset by Jeff’s biting commentary so beautifully. It would be AMAZING, yes?

@Emilia: TRUE. You are so right–I never considered the Hipster thing with the Ray-bans + Kindle combo. Aaaggh. An asymmetrical haircut would be totally inevitable. *shudder* And thank you. :)

@TKT: Here’s to working on something new soon! And aah, you’re right. Working title! How can I top Your Mom? Man, the good ol days. *pressure* And YES, we so called Jon & Kate. I think the world needs to pay closer attention to us. It is probably our fault but, you know. We will just have to shoulder this horrible Reality TV Psychic Burden.

@Mehmet: YOU MUST. There is nothing lame about that!! I’ll be so jealous. I have to get in on the pre-order action for Joey’s books for my autographed copies because my levels of hermitude will make it so I never get to a signing. Sigh. SO GO. I WILL LIVE VICARIOUSLY.

@Emily: YOU ARE SO RIGHT BB.

Should I admit that when I watch John & Kate, I think: Wow! I totally want to do that! It’d be like having a whole class of kids. Or a whole sports team. And then I talk about it a lot. Until St. Matt’s eyes are so large with terror that I’m afraid they’ll ‘splode out of his head.

Also, St.Matt’s dentist growing up was John’s Dad – but if it comes down to it, I’m so Team Kate.

      Book 3?! Can’t wait. Soon you’ll have 8 little book babies :)

Also, why do I get a FROWNY face. I disapprove! LOUDLY!

    11. 2 years, 11 months ago

REALLY?! That is admirable. When I watch J&K=8 I just get this really strong urge to run. ;) And THAT IS SUCH A NEAT SIX DEGREES OF CONNECTION TO JON!!! Aaah! It is like practically knowing him!!!
(hee, sorry about the ~frowny face~ – luck o’ the draw!)
